About SmartVINReport.com

Why we're building a better way to check vehicles in the US

The problem

When Americans buy a used car, the path to real safety data is unnecessarily expensive and confusing. Full vehicle history reports cost $40-50 each — a meaningful cost when you're comparing five or six cars before making a decision.

Meanwhile, public data from NHTSA — recalls, owner complaints, safety crash test ratings — is available at no cost and updated continuously. But almost nobody packages it cleanly for used-car buyers, and most people don't even know it exists.

What we're building

SmartVINReport.com is a US vehicle history platform built around two ideas: open access to public safety data, and practical insights that help you understand what the data actually means.

  • NHTSA recall, complaint, and safety data — unlimited, no signup, available now
  • Smart Buyer Reports available now — $16.99 per vehicle, one-time payment
  • Plain-English risk summaries that translate raw data into buying decisions
  • Mobile-first design built for browsing on a phone at a dealership lot
  • Honest, transparent pricing — flat per-report fee, no subscriptions, no hidden costs

Our mission

Make vehicle research transparent, affordable, and intelligent for every US buyer. Whether you're looking at a $5,000 used car or a $50,000 SUV, you should be able to make an informed decision without paying half the price of an oil change for the information.

Where we are today

We're live with both tiers: the free public data tier (VIN decoding, NHTSA recalls, complaints, and safety crash ratings) for everyday research, and the Smart Buyer Report ($16.99 per vehicle) for serious purchase consideration. Each Smart Buyer Report includes buyer risk analysis, common-issue forecasts by mileage, maintenance cost projections, pre-purchase inspection checklists, and US-specific insights covering winter wear, salt exposure, and fuel grade requirements.

$16.99 per vehicle. One-time payment, 90-day report access, 30-day satisfaction guarantee. No subscription, no recurring charges. See what's in a Smart Buyer Report →

What we do not claim

We think being clear about our limits is part of being trustworthy. SmartVINReport.com is a screening and buyer-decision tool, not a complete records service. Specifically:

  • We do not provide per-vehicle accident or collision history.
  • We do not run lien, title-branding, or ownership-transfer checks.
  • We do not provide theft-record or odometer-verification databases.
  • We are not affiliated with, and do not imply endorsement by, any government agency or manufacturer.

Depending on the vehicle and your state, some of those records may still matter for final due diligence — in which case you can verify them separately through the appropriate state registry (DMV) or a dedicated records provider. We would rather tell you that up front than pretend a screening tool covers everything.

Support and transparency

We believe used-car research should be easier to understand, easier to access, and easier to trust. That means transparent pricing, no subscription pressure, clear product boundaries, and responsive support when buyers have questions. Have a question about a VIN result or a Smart Buyer Report? Email support@smartvinreport.com and we'll do our best to help.

Who we are

SmartVINReport.com compiles reports from publicly available resources. We are not affiliated with any government agency, automotive manufacturer, or commercial vehicle history report provider. The vehicle safety data we display is sourced from the public US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) APIs.
